It’s Friday!
Edwin Starr secured his place in pop music history with his #1 1970 anti-Vietnam War hit “War.”
He started his musical career in Cleveland fronting his own Doo-Wop Group, The Future Tones. He later moved to Detroit and scored his first minor hit for Motown in 1964 with “Agent Double-O-Soul.”
I love that song.
Much later in the late 70s, he recorded a minor disco hit “(Eye to Eye) Contact,” but “War” and this song are his biggest hits. In 1968, “25 Miles” reached #6 on both the Hot 100 and R&B charts.
Starr continued to play blues and soul in his adopted home of England until his death in 2003.
Judging from the dancers, this clip probably dates from 1970-71. They look like a quartet of dancing Marcia Bradys.
Have a groovy weekend!
