Attrel Cordes, better known as Prince Be from the early 90s duo PM Dawn passed away yesterday. Attrel, who suffered from a stroke in 2005, passed away from renal kidney disease, a complication of ongoing diabetes.
If their biggest hit “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” doesn’t take you back to a place and time when everything seemed new and the possibilities endless, then you’re dead inside. Which also means you’ve never heard the “careless whisper from a careless friend. That’s the way it goes…I guess.” Two of my favorite lyrics from this humble genius. Lyrics that will always take me back to playing darts in my college apartment with buddies listening to every cut on 1993’s Bliss album. It also had the song “I’d Die Without You” from the Boomerang soundtrack. I tried to get my wife and my friend Eric to watch two weekends ago. It’s gold, pure gold.
So thank you, Prince Be, for listening to your heart and making the music you wanted the world to hear. The funny thing is that when I listened to your music, the first thing that came to mind was heaven. Thanks for leaving us a piece of you. Rest in peace.
