Groovy Friday – Get Yourself a Holiday Re-run

It’s Friday!

The holiday season is in full swing and part of the fun of the season is watching your favorite TV specials over and over and over and over again.  It’s tradition.  Here at Groovy Friday, we have no traditions because we’ve only been in business for a little over a year.  That means we can forge brand new traditions by lazily re-running posts from last holiday season.  And so shall it be.

This nifty clip from last year features The Standells performing Bony Maronie from the film “Get Yourself a College Girl”.  If you’re interested in the plot of this Christmas classic, you can read about it at the original GF post here.

But since I can’t just leave you with last year’s re-heated leftovers cherished holiday memories, here’s another groovy scene from the same film.  That’s last week’s GF guest star Nancy Sinatra in the red outfit.

As I mentioned in last year’s post, the film featurs an eclectic mish-mash of musical guests.  Here’s a sampling to give you a general idea.  First off it’s Jimmy Smith, sometimes referred to as The King of the Hammond B3, playing the holiday perennial “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”.  Not a Christmas song, but what does it matter?  Smith reaches a level of grooviness far deeper than the “girls with go-go boots” fare we usually feature here.

Next up, it’s the legendary Astrud Gilberto with the equally legendary Stan Getz (that’s him on the sax) performing their legendary hit “The Girl From Ipanema”.  Legendary.  If this doesn’t make you think of Christmas, well, you’re in good company.

Finally, we have The Rhythm Masters.  I’d never heard of these guys and I learned very little about them from the internet.  If anyone has any info regarding them let me know, because they rock.  See if this doesn’t put a smile on your face.

Have a groovy weekend!
