I looked over at Johnny. He had been missing a lot of notes during the second set, but I don’t think the audience noticed. His trumpet lolled loose in his bloated lap. Johnny winced as he slouched against the scratched-up piano, gasping. His yellow eyes met mine and he cracked a smile of pride and regret. A lifetime of hustling in and out of dark little clubs like this had caught up with Johnny and it was real sad. That was when I knew, for certain, that I was never going to take on “Juana’s burrito as big as your head challenge”.
