Here’s the prompt. Gee, that looks like a lot of birds. I wonder where they’re going in such a hurry? Do they have a task to perform or are they beautiful scenery for another happening entirely? Are they even a “they”? Maybe they are an “it” or a “him” or a “her”, if you catch my drift. I guess you’ll just have to tell us. If you’re willing, that is.

“The birds, Harriet. Look at all the birds.”
“It’s not so many. I’ve seen more.”
“No, you haven’t. Nobody has. Just yesterday, Gord over there told me that the sky was full of birds. It was half this amount. You shouldn’t brag, Harriet. Bragging doesn’t becoming you.”
“Well, maybe we stink more now. It has been over two days, and the sun’s been out.”
“Yeah, that’s probably it. Who you think they’ll dive into first?”
“It’ll be Gord. He lost his head, remember?”
“Oh, yeah. I remember.”
“Watch for the backhoe, just roll with it. Don’t fight it.”
“Right. Thanks.”
I remember the first time my Uncle Ned took me duck hunting. It was an early Autumn evening and we were sitting in a field next to the local municipal golf course. He warned me not to get too excited and start shooting at the first duck I saw….”Don’t worry lad, you’ll see more than your share.” With that, he stood and walked away.
Soon enough, the birds started arriving, dozens at first, then hundreds, then a massive flock from the East. The sound of their cries was overpowering.
I never fired a shot. I just sat there learning.
