It felt uncomfortable, like an itching that started down her thigh and crept up her rib cage and nestled, unbidden, in her neck. The scent of… something … came from the other side of the open pit. She couldn’t place it. Not quite earth, nor sodden leaves. A mixture of spices, like nutmeg or pepper.
Suddenly, the girl felt her feet give way — she was inside the earth itself. She could breathe perfectly well, though all the peat and soil surrounded her. A huge persimmon-colored nose appeared in the middle of a friendly, elf-like face.
“We’ve been waiting for you, Marietta.”
